Whether this is your first time making a significant move or your twentieth, you still may not realize how important it is for you to pack various items, such as books and collectibles, using the right methods. By taking your time and packing items such as these properly, there is far less chance they will be damaged by the moving company during your move. Moving companies such as Advantage Moving & Storage are happy to provide you with these five tips to help you pack

  1. Quality Boxes
No matter whether you are packing your favorite books or that selection of knick-knacks your kids have been buying you on birthday’s and special days, you need to use good quality boxes. The good news is that most stores are more than happy to supply you with empty boxes. Grocery stores and liquor stores seem to have the best boxes, just be sure to check them carefully first. Of course, at Advantage Moving & Storage, we are always happy to supply you with a selection of heavy duty boxes.
  2. Plenty of Packaging
Before you place your valuables inside the box, be sure to line the box with packing paper or better yet bubble wrap. The average moving company also recommends you fill any empty space with paper or bubble wrap and then cover the top of your possessions with one more layer to keep things from moving around in the box and to add more protection.
  3. Arranging Books
Never pack books flat, even though this might be tempting. Instead, according to the average library moving company, you should place the first layer in the box with the spine down and the alternate bound edges.
  4. Keep it Light
Keep in mind as you pack, books tend to be very heavy so avoid “over packing” and making your boxes too heavy to carry. If you make the boxes too heavy, they become easier to drop while you are carrying them. You also place yourself and the moving company employees at risk of severe back injuries.
  5. Wrap Breakables
Take the time to wrap each collectible with bubble wrap. Once again, be sure you fill all empty spaces with bubble wrap, foam packing chips, or paper. Like books, plates and bowls should be packed standing on their edges to protect them. Make sure boxes filled with collectibles and marked fragile.
